MJS Textile Designs
I have always been inspired by the locations and landscapes around me, particularly my home environment Shetland.
Born and brought up on the island I often find my textiles are influenced by Shetland, whether this be the colours, tones, textures or the emotional connection I have with the land.
I have just finished my final project in which I explored the Shetland environment whilst looking at how a location can influence a person’s identity. I was inspired by tyre imprints found in various locations particularly for pattern development but also as a reflection of a person’s journey. Although they can be simply overlooked they tell someone’s story, it is similar to a footprint and is unique to the individual making them. Location and identity go hand in hand and our experiences of place help us to reinforce our individuality. I feel very inspired by this theme and want to take this into future designs and projects.
My dissertation research into disabilities in the fashion industry has also influenced the way I approach design, with an aim of my textiles being as inclusive as possible.
