A b o u t   m e

I am a textile designer born and brought up in the Shetland Islands, creating and designing textiles with inspiration from the surrounding environment. I have always been drawn towards creative outlets both in my professional work or hobbies.  Although I have specialised in weave for my studies, I also enjoy creating knitted textiles and have produced various garments on commission.

Knitwear Studio Assistant | nielanell | dates: 2013-2016

  • I have had the opportunity to work alongside successful contemporary knitwear designer NielaNell. There were many valuable learning experiences from this position, from developing and maintaining a studio space to practical skills in finishing, mending and presenting garments to tourists and locals. I also assisted as co-worker in the running of the designer’s website, keeping up-to-date records of garments and taking photography of new swatches to upload

Knitwear Construction Worker | Laurence Odie Knitwear

  • I have been working as a linker at Laurence Odie Knitwear factory in Hoswick, Shetland since 2016.

  • While working in this position at I have developed my skills in garment construction and linking. I have had the chance to try a variety of garments from simple wraps and scarves to more complex jumpers and blazers.

  • I am still within this position and enjoying the variety of knitted garments and problems solving constructions

Personal | M J S textile designs

  • Studying and working within the creative industry has encouraged me to develop my own designs and creations in both knit and weave.

  • Although many of my commissions have been family orientated I would like to expand and develop a small business based on the skills and techniques acquired from studies and working experience.

Bradford Textile Competition 2013/2014

THE HOLLAND AND SHERRY AWARD For 1st year students only - A Woven Fabric in any Fiber or Blend – I received a commendation for this award for my woven fabric inspired by the Shetland ‘Mirrie Dancers’ (Northern lights).

“Making it Contemporary” Prize winner 2015

I received a prize from the Shetland wool Company “Jamieson and Smith” for the knitted garment I designed in second-year at college. The project and the exhibition was acknowledged in the student graduation ceremony in 2015.

Shetland Wool Week 2015/2016

I worked as part of a team of students to create and design products to sell at the Shetland Wool Week’s ‘Makers Market’. I attended both years and we raised enough money to send students to the New Designers textiles exhibition show in London.

Shetland wool week: Woven Textiles for Fashion award 2017

I was presented with this award for the woven fashion collection I designed for my 3rd year exhibition “3”. The collection consisted of two woven pieces, a wraparound skirt and scarf. I wanted to create garments with an adaptable feature, and so there was no set fastening but a strong pin that held both the skirt and shawl/scarf in place were the wearer desired it to be.

In between Island Competition: Year of Youth 2018

I have been accepted to take part in an inter Island placement in July 2018. This is very exciting and I am greatly looking forward to the experience.
